Review: iCig from electronic cigarette

I know what you’re thinking…another post where Laura tries an aid to stop her smoking and another failed attempt. Well, you’d be right if I’m honest. I am still smoking (and trust me, I am very ashamed of that) but I have cut down to the point where I am smoking less than I ever have done since I first made the mistake of starting and it is largely in part to the latest device I’ve been testing out- the iCig from electronic cigarette (c/o).
Apoligies, but an e-cigarette is never going to be the prettiest thing to post. However this done win bonus points for the best looking one I’ve tried. What I especially liked is that everything is contained in a handy box, that and the fact it came with a variety of flavours to try so you can get a feel for what is going to suit you best.

The starter kit claims to be quick and easy to get going with and really it is, it couldn’t be any easier. Each refill is the equivalent of 20 cigarettes so it also works out much cheaper than smoking the real thing (and I don’t know how harmless/harmful these are but they have to be safer than a traditional cigarette, right?).

I might not have completely quit yet but I am already feeling the benefits of smoking less, and since I’ve had this kit since way before Christmas (yes, I am horrendously tardy with this post) I’ve found myself barely reaching for this either…I quite simply don’t want to smoke in any shape or form any more and I am hoping beyond hope that the next time I write a post about the filthy habit it’s one to say I’ve done it!

The Home Spa with All Boxed Up

Winter can be a pretty depressing time, the days are grey, the nights are long and money is tight after the festive season. For many (myself included) indulgent treats are off of the agenda- I can’t justify popping to the salon for a facial or a massage when there are bills to pay and food to buy!

Thankfully it’s not all doom and gloom thanks to the folks at All Boxed Up who have put together a home spa beauty box for the bargain price of £19.99 (if you bought everything individually it’d set you back £113, how’s that for a bargain?). Featuring brands such as Cowshed, Timebomb, Sanctuary and Pecksniffs to name a few I was over the moon when they sent a box my way (c/o) to test out the idea and indulge in a little “me time”.

For me it was a bonus that I’ve not used any of these brands or products before- I love an excuse to try something new especially when it’s something I can’t ordinarily afford. I’m absolutely loving the bath float from Sanctuary (RRP £10) in the evenings after a stressful day. I can literally feel my worries melt away and it has the most soothing scent. Post bath I’ve been waking myself back up again with a hefty dose of Cowshed invigorating body lotion (RRP £20) which has all of my favourite scents combined- ginger and lemongrass is such a winning combination and I find this as soothing as it is invigorating.
For me the real luxury product in the box was the Pecksniffs dry body oil (RRP £25). I’ve learned to love oil type products having once had a bit of a phobia of them (yep, really!) and this dry oil is just gorgeous. I really suffer from dry skin in the winter months and this is working better than anything else on my knees and elbows especially. The smell is incredible too. For my dull and long suffering facial skin I’ve been popping on the Timebomb Derm Warfare Night Serum (RRP £38) religiously as it is designed to unclog pores and leave skin bright and healthy- exactly what I’m in need of! This is something I could never normally afford to buy so if I see it again in one of All Boxed Up’s deals I’m so diving in.

Last but by no means least comes another favourite from the box, the Percy & Reed lovingly light foaming treatment mask (RRP £20). Despite this being an award winning brand that I’ve often seen raved about I was yet to try it out for myself. This novel treatment is light as air and works miracles when it comes to restoring moisture to dried out locks. Again I’ll be keeping an eye out for further deals on this as it’s a must-have in my book.

Obviously I was sent this box for the purpose of review so it would be easy to say I’m a bit biased but I would 100% buy this, or similar from All Boxed Up in the future. It really is the most incredible value at under £20 (and that includes p&p!). You do need to act fast though as there is limited stock of everything, it’s become a new weekly stalking place for me.
Have you ever bought from All Boxed Up? I feel like I’m gushing but they’ve genuinely blown me away.

Be My (pretty pink) Valentine

There was barely a day between the vanishing of Christmas stock from the shops and the arrival of both Easter and Valentine’s Day. As much as I think most holidays have become somewhat over-hyped and commercialised I’m still a bit of a sucker for a theme and will look for any excuse to pick up a treat or six.

Ben and I aren’t really big on Valentine’s Day and this year we’ll both be working and then probably just collapsing in front of the TV for a lazy dinner and movie night when the 14th rolls around, therefore I was pretty excited when a package of the prettiest pink beauty products from firm favourites I Love… and Balmi arrived giving me the perfect excuse to indulge and pamper myself a bit.

I Love…products are a long time favourite of mine which you’ll know if you’ve been reading the blog for a while. The strawberries and cream fragrance is probably my number one scent for them, rivalled only by pink marshmallow so using these products has been a real treat. The hand cream has been my saviour of late as between work, moving and the cold weather my hands have been looking a little worse for wear. Often I find highly scented products such as these irritate my skin or further dry it out but I’m delighted to report that this isn’t the case and I have the softest, sweetest smelling hands in town. Up until now the pink marshmallow fragrance was a new one to me and I’m bordering on obsessed. This is the perfect way to kick start a gloomy morning even if the scent does make me rather hungry and craving sweet treats.

When it comes to lip balm there is only one brand for me these days. Far from being the gimmick I thought it might be I’m really in love with Balmi products and have amassed quite a collection. My most recent acquisition is the strawberry variety- as well as keeping your lips super smooth and soft they also make a rather lovely little gift for your best friend, mum, aunt (indeed just about anyone!) to show you care this Valentine’s Day!

What’s your favourite scent when it comes to shower and body products? I can’t resist anything fruity or sweet…

Any Valentine’s plans yet?

A Healthy New Year with Degustabox

Welcome to my first Degustabox review of 2016! It’s only fitting that the first box of the New Year was packed full of healthier treats to help keep those good intentions in check. It’s pretty safe to say I’ve fallen off the healthy eating wagon several times over by now but that hasn’t stopped me enjoying the goodness I found inside the box.
I love something sweet with a cup of tea in the afternoons and these bars from The Fabulous Bakers hit the spot nicely. Packed full of tropical flavour, real oats and plenty of fibre these are a no nonsense snack to tide you over until dinner. They went rather nicely with the bonus box inclusion of a skinny chai latte from Drink Me chai.
How cute is this smoothie pouch from Happy Monkey smoothies? I’m not that much of a smoothie drinker as a rule but I really enjoyed this strawberry and banana one. Made with 100% fruit and no preservatives/additives these might be targeted at kids but I’m pretty sure I’ll be purchasing these for myself as a pick me up at work. I was also pretty happy to see the inclusion of Koko dairy free milk in the box. Not that I think there’s anything wrong with cow’s milk, far from it! I just personally don’t enjoy the taste and prefer coconut and almond milk as an alternative especially when fortified with calcium for that all important bone health.
I took this alcohol free wine along to a gathering at a colleague’s house for the drivers and those partaking in dry January. I myself am not much of a drinker and don’t always wanted to be limited to a diet coke or feel like I stick out like a sore thumb. This tasted just like a glass of cold white wine but didn’t leave me with a sore head the next day and it meant I could enjoy more than one glass without getting all giggly (yes, I’m a terrible lightweight!)
I was really intrigued by the Beatavivo pouches. Essentially they are a crispy oat cereal (aptly in the shape of a heart) and can help lower your cholesterol and blood sugar levels. I really liked the taste of these, especially mixed in with some fruit and yoghurt for a healthy breakfast or bed time snack. One daily serving of these will go a long way to help your health! I can’t say I was as much of a fan of the compete energy bites- it was probably the lemon flavour that marred them for me, I just don’t like citrus much but they are a good energy hit for anyone studying hard for exams or doing a lot of exercise and they won’t add too many calories to your day either, coming in at 42 per bite.
A favourite from this month’s box was the Hip Pops- a healthier alternative to crisps. Available in 6 flavours (4 of which are gluten free) I was equally in love with both the barbeque and the sea salt & black pepper ones. I also found them more satisfying than crisps and I’m seeking out the rest of the flavours to try asap!
The product of the month from Degustabox was a pasta and sauce duo from Barilla. The whole-wheat pasta is a super tasty and quick way to get 20% of your daily fibre intake and served with the mediterranean pasta sauce makes for a speedy and delicious healthy dinner. No more ready meals for me after a long day at work!
I loved these freeze dried fruit snacks from Nothing But. I didn’t expect to be blown away by them at all but they were a really tasty hit of sweetness and light, perfect for some guilt free snacking action. I’ve tried a few of their products before but the pineapple and grape pack was new to me and a real winner. So tasty, low in calories for those on a diet and one of your five a day in one handy pack.
If you’re persuaded to give Degustabox a go (and really, you should) you can claim a brilliant £6 off of your first box by entering the code BLDEG15 at the checkout. It’s been a pleasure to work with the brand one and off over the last couple of years and it’s without a doubt something that I will continue to purchase long after our partnership ends. I love the monthly surprise and excitement as well as the chance to discover products I’d otherwise pass up on the supermarket shelves.

Gentle Powder Love from treaclemoon

I’m pretty certain I’m not alone at all in absolutely loving the scent of baby powder. I find it one of the ultimate comfort scents and at this time of year a long, hot bath with something that smells incredible is just what the doctor ordered to put a smile back on my face.

For this reason I was incredibly excited to find out about the launch of Gentle Powder Love from treaclemoon* (£2.99/500ml from Tesco). Already a favourite shower product brand of mine I just knew that this new arrival was going to be heavenly…

This is one luxuriously thick and creamy product that manages to both cleanse and soften the skin whilst enveloping you in the most amazing smell. It instantly transports me back to happy childhood days and is the perfect precursor to spending an evening on the sofa snuggled up tight in a blanket. Even the description on the bottle is dreamy…

“…The scent led her to a gentle place…a dreamy carousel ride on painted marshmallows and rainbow coloured elephants. Life was cute…”

Sometimes being transported back to your childhood happy place is just the ticket, if you too are a fan of the baby powder scent then this product is an absolute must buy next time you’re picking up your bread and milk (and milkybar buttons, ssh!) in Tesco.
