A Bright, bold and affordable tablet from Amazon

It’s hard to imagine now that I ever held anything against the Kindle. From my original stance of “I only like real books” I now realise that there is a place for both those and the e-book in my life and it’s rare that I head out for longer than an hour or so without my Kindle in my bag (so much lighter to carry for one thing).

Things have advanced hugely since the original Kindle launch and the Fire saw the introduction of not only an e-reader but a tablet too, at a surprisingly affordable price.

My Mum has had a Fire for some time and loves it so when I was offered the chance to trial one myself in one of three snazzy new colour ways I was game on. I’ve had the chance to test it out over the last two weeks and I kind of fell in love with Magenta powerhouse and have since decided to save up for one of my own.

At just £49 for the 8gb version this really is one of the most affordable tablets on the market and it packs a seriously powerful punch especially in comparison to my now almost vintage iPad.

The display is crystal clear which makes both reading and browsing a doddle and everything synced up seamlessly with my standing Kindle and Amazon account meaning I could access the books I was currently reading, my wish lists and gift card balance. This is a nippy little device thanks to it’s powerful processors and although 8gb storage isn’t loads you can easily extend this with the purchase of a microSD card.

The inbuilt camera takes good, clear photos and with capacity to link up to all of your social media you can share a snap in seconds. The App Store is comprehensive and will keep you well supplied with games as well as all of your favourite social networks. You can also download TV shows and movies (which I didn’t do, I admit) and access thousands of music tracks from all of your favourite artists.

For me the big draw to this is the portability. It’s so compact and lightweight it’s hard to believe what it’s capable of. I love the addition of the three bold colour ways (magenta, red and blue) and for the price you really, really can’t go wrong.

Already have a Fire? Let me know what you love best! And to anyone contemplating getting one, I highly suggest it. I wish I’d save some of my birthday money now to purchase my own!

Lolly’s Sweet Treats

Have I ever mentioned how much I love sweets? To be fair I probably haven’t dropped it in to conversation as my relationship with food has somewhat deteriorated lately but now that’s all changing and I’m pleased to say that sweet sugary goodness is firmly back on the menu! So it was quite timely really that Lolly’s Sweet Treats got in touch and offered to send me some samples of their wares. I’d have been foolish not to take up this chance, especially from a company that stocks retro favourites and packages them in seriously lovely glass jars!
Two jars were delivered to the door and packed full of some of my favourite confections. I have a real thing for liquorice so the heart shaped jar stuffed with giant liquorice comfits was pretty much heaven. Honestly if I could only eat one type of sweet for the rest of my life it would be liquorice, it probably comes from being spoilt when I was younger with all types of the black stuff by my Dutch relatives but yeah, I have a serious addiction.
The second item was possibly even more exciting. A giant bottle stuffed full of sweeties that remind me of going to the corner shop on the way home from school for a 10p mix up (showing my age here!). The bottle was literally rammed with sweets and chocolates and included some all time favourites like coconut mushrooms, icy cups, foam bananas and flying saucers- to name but a few!

Both jars came beautifully packaged and also well protected from the hands of the postal system and I’d love to receive one of these as a gift at any time! Products aren’t just limited to jars either so be sure to take a look at what else is on offer. Lolly’s Sweet Treats is supported by The Princes Trust and is certainly a shop to keep your eye (and sweet tooth) on with lots of exciting products soon to launch. I know for certain I’ll be placing several orders in the future…liqourice catherine wheels and some foam mushrooms are calling out to me as I type.

What’s your favourite retro sweet? Liquorice aside I don’t think I could narrow it down there are just so many I love (she says as the jar in front of her is rapidly going down)…

The April (2016) Degustabox + discount

Over a month has passed us by and it’s time to bring you the next round of Degustabox reviews. The April box was full of exciting treats- the team have been on the ball lately and picked out some super products most of which I’d probably ignore if I saw them on the shelves as I’m very much a creature of habit. It’s always a joy to receive one of these boxes every month, I still get them delivered to my parents’ address so my Mum and I can stick with our tradition of opening them together…it’s the little things in life and something we really enjoy even if it does mean I sometimes have to share the goods!
The first product I pulled out of the box was these fruit strings by Bebeto (£1.99). These are an award winning product thanks to their innovative use of fruit juice and reduction in processed sugars. Suitable for vegetarians AND vegans these are probably targeted as kids but I’ve really been enjoying them myself and have a couple stashed in my handbag for a boost on the go.
This is the second time products from Parle have been included in the Degustabox and despite apparently being the largest selling biscuit brand in the world this is only the second time I have encountered them. The rusk biscuits were a revelation, enriched with cardamom and wonderfully crunchy I wasn’t expecting much from something that sounds so simple but they are dangerously addictive and really tasty! At 89p for a pack they are a bargain too! The little pack of biscuits (29p) are also really yummy and Parle is a brand I’ll be keeping a closer eye out for in the future.
I’ve been a big fan of Popchips ever since they first launched in the UK so I was excited to see some new flavours. I received the limited edition sea salt, garlic and rosemary flavour which taste amazing. I wasn’t convinced about rosemary as it isn’t my favourite herb but it works very well with the garlic and despite my intention to share this bag, it just didn’t happen and I found myself hiding it in my cupboard for purely selfish purposes. At £1.99 they aren’t cheap but a great healthy alternative for TV snacking or to serve with dips when entertaining.
CHOCOLATE! Who doesn’t love it? When I was younger I was obsessed with these smarties chocolate blocks- I fondly remember smaller size bars in both milk and white chocolate and I’m still not over their disappearance. I did actually surrender this bar to my Mum who is equally taken with this chocolate and I don’t think sharing even came in to it. Something new from Milkybar also provided great excitement from me as I just can’t resist the lure of creamy white chocolate. The Milk & Crunchy is a little snack sized bar in the shape of a cow with a crispy textured centre that provides a lovely contrast to the well known and loved creamy taste. A hit from me! (£1.00 for these and £1.99 for the Smarties block)
The drinks selection in the Degustabox is always the most hit and miss area for me due to being incredibly fussy about which liquids I’ll consume. As such I can’t claim to have tried all of the products included this month and have instead passed them on to willing volunteers. I did try the dry apple spritz from Thor though (£1.80 each) which was rather delicious- I love a dry apple drink and this would be perfect for tee-totallers at a party. I couldn’t face the apple/mint flavour but I’m sure if you like that kind of thing it’s lovely.
I know many people these days think artificial sweeteners are the devils’ work but I still use them and try not to think too much about it! Sugarly from Canderel (£3.00) is a new offering which is said to be the closest thing to sugar other than sugar itself. I wouldn’t disagree. This is the most sugar like sweetener I’ve tried both in terms of taste, and texture. I also found a little goes a long way, which with some products isn’t the case. It’s a hit from me!
These trays of rice from Veetee are such a cupboard staple for a quick and easy dinner. The wholegrain brown rice and quinoa tray was right up my street and was a lovely addition to a lunch time chicken salad. I gave the Levi Roots marinade (£1.00) to my dad to try out and as far as I’m aware he hasn’t yet, but I shall report back on that one.
If you’re persuaded to give Degustabox a go (and really, you should) you can claim a brilliant £6 off of your first box by entering the code BLDEG15 at the checkout. It’s been a pleasure to work with the brand one and off over the last couple of years and it’s without a doubt something that I will continue to purchase long after our partnership ends. I love the monthly surprise and excitement as well as the chance to discover products I’d otherwise pass up on the supermarket shelves.

OneByOne Jewellery

I expect most people know by now that I’m pretty obsessed with jewellery and like a magpie always seek out new and exciting brands to feature. Recently I was introduced to OneByOne Jewellery who specialise in unique silver pieces and when they invited me to pick out a couple of pieces I couldn’t resist.
The first piece I picked out was this simple but stunning Criss Cross Ring– I’ve always been intrigued by this style of ring and never really understood how they worked until now. This is such a minimalistic statement piece that I’ve been wearing non-stop alongside my usual finger adornments, there’s not much else I can say other than I love it!
The second piece I chose was another super simple but beautiful Horseshoe Necklace that hasn’t left my neck since it’s arrival. It’s a quirky take on the horseshoe necklaces I’ve seen up until now and it just sits perfectly and compliments any outfit.
Both pieces are reasonably priced for sterling silver- £30 for the criss cross ring and £36 for the horseshoe necklace. I can’t not mention the packaging either as it was so lovely and made opening the parcel an extra special treat- I almost didn’t want to open the boxes as it would spoil the pretty effect but I soon got over that!
OneByOne jewellery pride themselves on customer service and from the experience I’ve had I can see why. Granted I was sent these items for review and obviously they would want to impress but I get the impression from the e-mail exchanges I’ve had that they really do care and want to go that extra mile- a refreshing change in this day and age.
Which pieces have caught your eye from their website? I’ve got my eye on several more pieces and 100% would not hesitate in ordering from them in the future.

White Daisies

You know me, I love my jewellery and discovering a new (or at least new to me) brand is something that fills me with excitement. I was recently introduced to White Daisies who specialise in bespoke 3D printed jewellery, designed by you and created by them. I’m all for something with a personal touch so when they offered to make me a piece I jumped at the chance of owning one of their handwritten name necklaces.
Whilst I didn’t choose this option you can actually have this made with your own handwriting for a truly personal touch which I think is a wonderful idea and something I haven’t come across before. The necklace is a lovely bold piece which still manages to remain delicate whilst making a bit of a statement and at £15 would make a wonderful gift for a friend or loved one (and of course for yourself!)

Also available are single initial necklaces, a personalised piece made from your favourite font, a hashtag, a bird and of course a namesake daisy. You can view the entire range in the shop and they couldn’t be lovelier or more helpful when placing your order.

So now, tell me…what’s your necklace going to say?
