Hack Your Home to Cut Chore Time*

Whether you are having a quick tidy up or a full on spring clean, housework can be one of the most annoying chores of all. You get it all done and within what seems no time at all it needs doing again. Here are some simple hacks to help make it a little easier, and they may help to make a less thankless task.

Rubbish Bins

Rubbish bins seem to fill really quickly- especially kitchen ones. Have you ever been in a rush and emptied it and forgot to replace the bin bag? The next person does not always realise there is no bag in there and you can end up with one very messy bin to clean. Leave a few spares bags in the bottom of the bin as then even if you are in a hurry it will take just a few seconds to replace the one you have take out.

Bins can get very smelly too, especially in summer; but a couple of slices of lemon wiped around the inside of the bin lid will help to combat this problem.

Floors

If a floor looks dirty and messy the whole room does. You need a simple way of keeping your floors looking good all of the time, the answer could be laminate flooring by Factory Direct Flooring as it takes very little effort to sweep and mop so that it comes up like new. The final coat that the manufacturers use ensures that it is stain and water resistant, and is not prone to scratches or dents. It is cheaper than most other flooring types and will last for many years; an added bonus is that it is very easy to install.

Bed Linen

When you decide to change the household bed linen from John Lewis, or whoever your favourite seller is, do you find that you spend ages trying to get the right sheets and pillowcases together so the bedding sets match? The easiest time to do this is when the laundry has dried before you put it away. Fold each sheet and place it inside a pillowcase it belongs with, and do the same with the quilt cover and other pillowcases. Then it is simple just to pick out the set for the bed you are about to change.

Oven Cleaning

There are not many people that look forward to the prospect of having to scrub an oven clean, but it is a job that has to be done at some point. You can stop it getting so messy be placing a sheet of tinfoil on the bottom of the oven, then any spillages will not stain the oven itself, and the foil is easily replaceable. When you are roasting anything put foil over the top of the meat until the last half hour or so; this reduces that amount of fat splashes that cause most of the gunk inside an oven.

If you really cannot face this task then there are people who specialise in cleaning ovens, but you have to be prepared to pay around £100 for the job to be done. It pays to keep on top of keeping your oven clean so you don’t end up with one messy and daunting task ahead.

Anything that can help to reduce the amount of housework you have to do is welcome, but sometimes you have no choice but to get stuck in and do it.

Reasons to Start a Technical Career*

Photo by Marvin Meyer on Unsplash

Since we are now in a world which revolves around technology, a career in a technical area is a wise choice for all sorts of people. This is a broad category, and there are plenty of areas of specialism which may prove to be perfect for you. A lot of people who get into technical careers find themselves working in a very flexible manner – either working remotely as freelancers, or even starting companies of their own. So, let’s run through just some of the top reasons why you would want to start a technical career yourself.

Variety of Different Career Paths

As we have just mentioned, getting involved in a technical career is not limiting and there are all sorts of different paths which could prove to be right for you. Some of the top choices out there include technical writer, web developer, computer engineer (take a look at a master computer engineering course if you think that this is right path for you), SEO consultant and many more. Of course these jobs are competitive and require you to keep ahead of the competition if you want to achieve great levels of success.

You Can See What You Study

Unlike some jobs which may leave you wondering if what you are doing is making a real difference, there is a very practical element to working in a technical job. You are the one building the website, fixing the issue, writing the code etc. You have something to show from your work, and there is certainly a level of satisfaction to be gained from this.

Flexible Working Style

Many jobs allow for a greater degree of flexibility these days, and this is certainly the case with ones in the technical field. Since many of these jobs only need a laptop or computer you can set up from wherever you would like once you have established a business, a group of clients or an arrangement with your current company. And as your skills start to develop you can advance up the career ladder, which is likely to lead to bigger pay-checks as well.

You Will be in Demand

As the world is coming to rely more and more on technology for all sorts of different areas of life you are likely to find yourself readily in demand – especially as your skills start to advance. Essentially you will want to establish a particular niche for yourself as soon as possible, and work hard to develop your skills in that particular area. But since you have chosen such a fast-moving industry to work in you also need to make sure that you keep your skills fresh and up to date. Otherwise, you could find yourself falling behind the times and at risk of your skills becoming obsolete.

Now is as good a time as any to start off your career journey in a technical field, and these are just some of the top reasons why this is the case.

The Impact of what, and where we eat

As part of re-developing a healthy relationship with food I’ve really begun to appreciate the importance of sitting down at a table for a meal. Even when dining alone it focuses your mind on what you’re eating, meaning you appreciate the meal, the tastes and pay attention to your body’s hunger signals and personal tastes. If eating in company then it provides the perfect environment to maintaining healthy relationships; whilst it might be tempting to sprawl on the couch with your parter and your supper, it does tend you mean you ignore each other in favour of what’s on the TV screen.

I’m not alone in this either, recent research commissioned by furniture retailer Furniture Village shows that one in three people chose the dining table as their favourite spot to enjoy a meal, with 70% adding it had a positive impact on family relations, and 28% stating it improved their mental health (I’m 100 percent with that 28%).

Whilst preference for eating at a table might be strong, this doesn’t manage to translate itself in to reality. Out of 2,000 UK residents surveyed, the research showed that 52% ditched the table, and daily conversation in favour of the TV, and 42% opted to spend time on their phones whilst eating rather connecting directly with those around them.

This kind of makes me sad. I feel like food, and family time should be top priority- as kids we always ate as a family, and whilst I went through various phases of wanting to eat away from the table (mostly isolated away from anyone and distracted by a screen or loud music) I’ve always come back to the classic table chair set up, and Bob and I make a point of never eating slouched on the couch except in rare circumstances (Westworld finale included).

It’s not just relationships with those around us that suffer with TV dinners, nutritionist Samantha Paget stated: “Food choices may be negatively impacted by eating away from the dining table – with the temptation to grab something that’s easier to eat, which doesn’t often contain a wide variety of fresh nutrients.”

With good nutrition being my primary focus these days this does make me very aware that I need to pull my socks up when it comes to week day lunching. I am one of the 36% who eat at their desk every day- and whilst I do go out for twenty minute walk on my break this does mean I’m mindlessly munching my sushi or sandwich whilst focusing on something else. Lunch is the one meal I never put effort in to and I make choices based on how quick they are to eat, and how portable they are, rather than nutritional content or taste.

Whilst I don’t think my habits are too bad, compared to the statistics from the study that also show that 12% of adults never eat at the table, and that 41% see eating purely as a functional task.

The survey of more than 2,000 UK adults was commissioned by furniture retailer Furniture Village in a campaign to encourage people to reclaim their dining table and enjoy the all the positive impacts it can have on our physical and mental health, from a reduction in over-eating and heightened enjoyment of food to better family relationships. To see all the tips, visit the webpage. It makes for interesting reading and highlighted for me what I’m doing well and where I could stand to improve.

What are your eating habits like, and how do you compare to this study?

Also, any tasty, healthy lunch ideas to share? I need some serious inspiration after years of using as an excuse to skip a meal, or fill up on tasteless junk.

Losing the fear of being judged by others

For as long as I can remember a fear of being judged by other people has held me back. I never spoke out at school, always tried to fit in with the norm and stopped myself accepting many opportunities that have come my way purely because I was so anxious about what other people might think of me that it was just easier to say no.

For the most part I’m much better with this these days. I’ve learnt to trust in my ability, and my opinion and don’t hold back anywhere near as much as I used to. I’ve gone from isolating myself and not socialising to pushing myself to interact and go to things…it’s not perfect, but a far cry from how it used to be.

There is however, one huge area where this fear of judgement holds me back, and that is my weight. I’ve had an eating disorder for 16 years and whilst weight loss was more of a side-effect of the over-riding control issues I’ve always struggled massively with getting back to a healthy weight.
For ages now I’ve had my head buried firmly in the sand about being done with weight gain. The fact is I still have a few kilos left to restore to be at optimum health and my main barrier to gaining them? As shallow as it sounds, it’s what other people might think of me.

Tee: Monki | Skirt and Shoes: ASOS

It’s only now that I’m really, really ready to let go of the final shackles this illness holds over me that I realise how much this has been holding me back. Forever fearful that if I gain those last few kilos I’ll be seen as greedy, as having “let myself go” and that people will wonder why on earth I’ve made a conscious decision to gain weight when I’m no longer in a position where it’s medically critical.

I’ve done a lot of thinking on the matter and I’ve realised how futile it is to restrict my life based on my perception of what other people may think.
If someone were to judge for for getting to the healthiest place I can be, ready to live the rest of my life then which one of us has the real problem here?

In the last year my life has expanded infinitely more than my waist line. I’ve found true love, I’ve thrived at work, I’ve had more freedom than I’ve ever known and it’s all still growing. With driving, moving in with my boyfriend, and hopefully in a couple of years starting a family all on the cards – not to mention the more minor things like finally being able to exercise again, to order cake when I’m out for coffee with friends without caring about the calories not being allotted to my day…all things I haven’t done for so many years it’s frustrating to know, and to finally realise and accept that I’m the one who has been holding me back all along.

And in recent weeks I am slowly learning to let go, and writing this blog post pays a big part in this. This public declaration that I’m not done with gaining weight, that yes, I will still share outfit photos and over the coming weeks and months you will witness me return to full health and full strength- this is a massive mile stone in my recovery. Even as I type this post I feel myself wanting to delete it, for fear of what my readers and my friends might think.
It’s not an easy process and not an hour goes by at the moment where I don’t question if this is right, if I can do this, if I even want this (of course I do). Fear of weight gain goes hand in hand with this and the thought of seeing the scales creep up and my clothes getting snugger fills me with a fear that I can’t even begin to explain. But finally, the fear of not living the life I want- never getting married, never having children, compromising my relationship over-rides that fear by a mile.
No more lies, no more excuses. This is a commitment to myself and to my future with Bob, my love for my family and finally not having that constant feeling of what someone else might be thinking about me- or at not letting that thought jeopardise what I do.

This is my two fingers up to fear of being judged. Finally I have a life I love, albeit still restricted by restriction and the only way to see it grow and flourish further is to grow and to flourish myself.

Green Queen

It seems to really take something special to get me to do an outfit post these days, gone are the days where I felt comfortable posing in whatever I happen to have chucked on- as ever it’s body image crises and lack of free time that have led to this drought, but a recent shopping trip and arrival of something rather beautiful from Browns Family Jewllers ensured I cleared some time in my schedule, took a deep breath and asked Bob to grab the camera.

Dress: Monki | Shoes: Lotus | Bracelet c/o Browns Family Jewellers

At first, when I saw these photos all I could focus on was my perceived flaws and I came very close to not using them at all. Thankfully I got over myself, and whilst I can’t say I love them, I can appreciate how different I look from last year- in a positive and healthy way, how the colour of this dress suits me and how much happier I look these days.
I loved this dress the second I saw it in Monki, and at £25 it was an absolute steal. It’s not the most flattering of lengths, but the fit of the rest of it redeems it; I loved pairing it with these blue suede shoes but it also looks great for work with black tights and ankle boots, as well as with trainers and bare legs for a relaxed feel.

It also made the perfect backdrop for the main focus of this post- my new Daisy Jewellery Brow Chakra Bracelet*. Beautifully delicate, this rose gold chain hosts a beautiful little amethyst alongside it’s brow chakra main charm. The Brow Chakra is emotionally connected with insight, self-realization and releasing negative thoughts and strives towards self-reflection. It seemed the perfect piece to add to my jewellery collection, an every day reminder of what I need to focus on. I own several pieces of Daisy Jewellery, most of which I have purchased from Browns- they have great prices and fast, reliable delivery and their Chakra range is by far my favourite (aside, perhaps from the namesake Daisy collections). I’m not an especially spiritual person but I hope that by wearing this I can keep myself grounded and power on to the end of this recovery weight restoration journey where the real work, of learning self acceptance and perhaps even some self love can begin.
