Exploring The Algarve & my new favourite Bikini

I’m currently on week two of a much needed break from work, and whilst this week is filled with more practical things (like attempting to conjure up blog content and doing a block booking of driving lessons), last week Bob and I spent five glorious days exploring the Algarve.

Neither of us had been to Portugal before and weren’t entirely sure what to expect. It’s certainly a beautiful part of the world, and everyone we met was so friendly and welcoming.
We hired a car for the duration of our trip, which was essential as the villa we were staying it was in quite a remote location, but it gave us the freedom to explore many of the towns and cities along the coast and we certainly packed a lot in to our short trip. The Algarve Shopping centre was a great stop when seeking respite from the sun, and evening beach strolls might just be our new favourite activity.

We didn’t spend an awful lot of time on the beach, we were more keen to explore the area- and I managed to get epic sunburn on the first day which meant keeping covered was key (and yes, I was slathered in sun cream, but foolishly thought factor 30 would be ok on my english rose skin!). What time we did spend on the beach was mostly based at Praia dos Salgados, by far our favourite stretch of sand as it was somehow less crowded than the other beaches we tried and had a gorgeous nature reserve behind it were we wandered happily spotting turtles in the water.

It was here we photographed my new favourite bikini c/o UK Swimwear. Braving a bikini was a huge deal for me as this was the first time I’ve ever been abroad at anything even remotely resembling a healthy weight. Thankfully this beautifully detailed bikini by Piha helped persuade me. I love the unique back strap detail and the flattering crop top style. I wasn’t brave enough to go full bikini on the blog so slung on some ASOS jersey shorts at the last minute, but you get the idea.
This was my most worn bikini of the holiday, and whilst I might have once balked at nearly £60 for a set, this has convinced me it’s worth investing.

We’d definitely go back to The Algarve. There is so much more we want to see and do – and eat! We had some absolutely amazing food out there, and if anyone is planning on heading near Albufeira this year then both Bob and I 100% recommend taking a trip to Galé and having dinner at Massa Fina– it might not be traditional Portugese food, but this was hands down the best pasta (me) and Calzone (Bob) that we’ve ever had. You will need to book a table, but it’s 100% worth it.

Where have you been holidaying this year? I had intended to make more of this post by sharing a lot more photos, but it turns out we were so busy having fun and taking in our surroundings that we barely took any- what kind of blogger am I?

The Impact of what, and where we eat

As part of re-developing a healthy relationship with food I’ve really begun to appreciate the importance of sitting down at a table for a meal. Even when dining alone it focuses your mind on what you’re eating, meaning you appreciate the meal, the tastes and pay attention to your body’s hunger signals and personal tastes. If eating in company then it provides the perfect environment to maintaining healthy relationships; whilst it might be tempting to sprawl on the couch with your parter and your supper, it does tend you mean you ignore each other in favour of what’s on the TV screen.

I’m not alone in this either, recent research commissioned by furniture retailer Furniture Village shows that one in three people chose the dining table as their favourite spot to enjoy a meal, with 70% adding it had a positive impact on family relations, and 28% stating it improved their mental health (I’m 100 percent with that 28%).

Whilst preference for eating at a table might be strong, this doesn’t manage to translate itself in to reality. Out of 2,000 UK residents surveyed, the research showed that 52% ditched the table, and daily conversation in favour of the TV, and 42% opted to spend time on their phones whilst eating rather connecting directly with those around them.

This kind of makes me sad. I feel like food, and family time should be top priority- as kids we always ate as a family, and whilst I went through various phases of wanting to eat away from the table (mostly isolated away from anyone and distracted by a screen or loud music) I’ve always come back to the classic table chair set up, and Bob and I make a point of never eating slouched on the couch except in rare circumstances (Westworld finale included).

It’s not just relationships with those around us that suffer with TV dinners, nutritionist Samantha Paget stated: “Food choices may be negatively impacted by eating away from the dining table – with the temptation to grab something that’s easier to eat, which doesn’t often contain a wide variety of fresh nutrients.”

With good nutrition being my primary focus these days this does make me very aware that I need to pull my socks up when it comes to week day lunching. I am one of the 36% who eat at their desk every day- and whilst I do go out for twenty minute walk on my break this does mean I’m mindlessly munching my sushi or sandwich whilst focusing on something else. Lunch is the one meal I never put effort in to and I make choices based on how quick they are to eat, and how portable they are, rather than nutritional content or taste.

Whilst I don’t think my habits are too bad, compared to the statistics from the study that also show that 12% of adults never eat at the table, and that 41% see eating purely as a functional task.

The survey of more than 2,000 UK adults was commissioned by furniture retailer Furniture Village in a campaign to encourage people to reclaim their dining table and enjoy the all the positive impacts it can have on our physical and mental health, from a reduction in over-eating and heightened enjoyment of food to better family relationships. To see all the tips, visit the webpage. It makes for interesting reading and highlighted for me what I’m doing well and where I could stand to improve.

What are your eating habits like, and how do you compare to this study?

Also, any tasty, healthy lunch ideas to share? I need some serious inspiration after years of using as an excuse to skip a meal, or fill up on tasteless junk.

The June Degustabox*

The June 2018 Degustabox* and it’s arrival was swiftly followed by another exciting delivery in the form of some actual, summer weather here in the UK.
Ok so the novelty of the heatwave may have started to wear off now, but this month’s box was packed full of treats to help make any outdoor dining exciting. As ever I’ve done my best to try everything included in the box, but as also as ever there are a few products that I haven’t quite got round to yet.
I passed these biscotti from Great British Biscotti Co on to my Grandad for his expert opinion as I can’t eat them. He gave them a rave review, and they certainly look delicious. Made with only the finest ingredients and available in 20 different flavours, this particular variety left us with high hopes for more greatness from the brand which is soon to be available on Ocado and Amazon.
I’m addicted to Mighty Fine honeycomb and usually grab myself a sharing bag when I’m in Waitrose. These single portion bars are a welcome addition to the range and I highly recommend the Salted Caramel flavour. I’m not usually a Salted Caramel girl, but for this I make exception. You can find these in Sainsbury’s Local stores nationwide. Think next level Crunchie.
The product of the month this month was Capsicana cook sauces which I confess I haven’t tried yet. I haven’t been at home much to cook but I cannot wait to rustle up some fajitas with these- particularly the chilli and lime variety. I’ve used this brand’s products before and they really pack a powerful flavour punch so I have high expectations for these.
I had intended to save these Brioche Pasquier pains au lait for a savoury hotdog (veggie dog) filling, but as is prone to happen I got distracted by the bright and bold packaging and lure of a sweet and easy snack and munched them as are. It’s a bit cliche these days but I love brioche paired with savoury flavours so I am planning to repurchase soon for a BBQ feast. Having refused BBQ food for the best part of 16 years, this year I can’t get enough!
I’ve been eyeing up these Peckish BBQ rice crackers (and other varieties) in Sainsburys for a while now but never got round to buying them, therefore I couldn’t wait to try these. Light and crispy, with a good strong BBQ flavour these are baked rather than fried, gluten free and under 100 calories per portion. I’m looking forward to trying more from the brand.
I’ve long been an advocate of the Frylight brand as I still have a phobia of actual oil. The Avocado oil variety can withstand higher temperatures than other types making it ideal for stir-fries (although Bob and I mostly use it in our toastie maker)
Another product I haven’t got around to yet is this Idahoan Gratin Bake. It sounds delicious though, and is a quick and fuss free way to whip up a BBQ side dish. Assuming it’s as tasty as it sounds then this is a genius idea and I will report back once I’ve had a go.
As you can see, there was quite a selection of drinks in the June box- I skipped straight over the Fyre fruit drinks I’m sorry to say. I’m not a fan of anything but fruit in my drinks and the idea of added spice left me feeling a bit squeamish. As a concept though I think they are great, if you have tried these I’d love to know what you thought.

The Raspberry Roller cider from Rosie’s Pig when to my Dad who enjoyed it chilled, as an easy drink at the end of a long and hot day. At £2.00 a can it seems reasonably priced and looks and feels more premium than many flavoured ciders on the market.

There’s not much one can say about Orangina that hasn’t already been said. Unless you’ve lived under a rock you’ll be aware of the brand. That being said, Bob and I still very much enjoyed these bottles straight from the fridge after a very hot day. It’s a classic for a reason.

Finally we have no&more rapsberry & blueberry water. I’m trying to up my water intake but it has to be flavoured so finding one that tastes decent, with no added sugar or anything artificial is always a priority. I liked this and would definitely buy it if I saw it in a shop near me. It also comes in Tangerine & Mango which I’m 100% seeking out as well as a couple of other flavours.

For those who don’t yet know, Degustabox* is a monthly food subscription box that gives you the chance to try new and exciting products on the market whilst providing amazing value for money.
On a month by month basis the box costs £12.99 (with a discount for longer subscriptions) but the contents are generally worth far more than this as you can see if you do the maths.

If you’re persuaded to give Degustabox a go (and really, you should) you can claim a brilliant £5.00 off of your first box (making it just £7.99!) by entering the code 6HZJ8 at the checkout. It’s been a pleasure to work with the brand regularly over the last couple of years and it’s without a doubt something that I will continue to purchase long after our partnership ends. I love the monthly surprise and excitement as well as the chance to discover products I’d otherwise pass up on the supermarket shelves.
Let me know if you’ve tried any of these products and what you thought of them.

Degustabox- May 2018*

Yep, it’s already that time of the month! It’s time to get yourself comfortable and get ready for some serious stomach rumbling as you make your way through my latest Degustabox* review. The May 2018 box was world cup themed- now I’m not a football fan, in fact I was only vaguely aware that it was world cup year! However, I can see how a lot of the products in this month’s box would appeal to those gathering round to support their favourite team…let’s dive in!
There was a kitten sized mishap with the May product of the month, hence the mug shot of Pablo, the destroyer of anything. He managed to break in to the packet of mini coconut and black pepper soft tortillas- we left them un-attended for all of five minutes and came back to find them ripped open and mostly devoured. Given the speed in which he munched them I’d say they were a hit, but it did mean my plans of making some wraps using the Caribbean creamy chicken curry mix (both from Santa Maria Latin American Kitchen) had to be put on a back burner until I can find these wraps in the shops. Cheers Pablo! The sauce mix costs £1.00 and the tortillas £1.50
Long term readers will know by now that I won’t have tried the reduced sugar drink from Say Aloe- I’m sure it’s very nice if you like that kind of thing, but I can’t bring myself to try it and will pass this on to someone braver than I. The lemonade from We Made was delicious though, really delicious. It’s rare I enjoy a soft drink that isn’t diet coke or pepsi max but if I saw this in the shops on a hot day I’d 100% grab it.
Lucozade was a fitting addition to a sport themed box, and I am sure most people are familiar with this old school classic- my old faithful hangover cure in my drinking days! Aloe drink £1.49, Lemonade £1.50, Lucozade £1.10.
These Ciders from The Good Cider would be perfect for post match celebration, or commiseration. Despite my west-country origins I am not a cider drinker but these went down exceptionally well with my father.
KitKats are my all time favourite chocolate bar, you can’t beat the original but these white chocolate bites come close! These are the ideal size for sharing, although they taste so good I can’t help but feel they won’t last long enough to be shared around. RRP is £1.59 but you’ll often find them on offer for £1.
(On an aside to this, who has tried the Ruby KitKat yet? So fragrant but pretty tasty!)
Another product from KitKat and another one I really, really don’t want to share! The return of KitKat senses was good news to many, and I’ve been looking for these locally with no success. Individually wrapped and in three flavours- double chocolate, hazelnut and salted caramel these are really very good- although I’d like to see a more imaginative flavour selection from nestle in the future, there’s so much potential! £3.99 per sharing box.
Brioche Pasquier products remind me of my school days, I often had one of their filled brioche rolls in my lunch box and the taste, unchanged for years, transports me right back. These are brilliant little snacks for picnics, car journeys, day trips, breakfast on the go…individually wrapped and small enough to not be too naughty I’m steadily working my way through both varieties right now. At £1.39 for a pack of 4 they are a pretty good value snack as well.

The April 2018 Degustabox

Grab a brew and get your self comfy as this month’s Degustabox* review is going to be a long one! The April box was absolutely packed full of products, so many that almost out of time to try absolutely everything and still get a post up in a timely manner. There are a few products that I haven’t tried yet due to my allergy to peanuts, I’ve passed them on to people who can test them for me but I’m yet to get full reports back!
One of the products I wasn’t able to try were the TREK protein energy chunks, this saddens me greatly as they look so good! I used to love Nakd and Trek products before my allergy pitched up so I can guarantee I would have loved these, a great energy packed, HEALTHY snack for post work-out or any time at all really. RRP £1.15 each and widely available.
It’s rare you see something truly new appear on the confectionary market these days so these Milkybar Wowsomes evoked a great deal of curiosity. With 30% less sugar than similar products (thanks to some fancy science) these really are a tasty little snack, although I do wish there was a variety without the crispy oat cereal as I love plain old Milkybar! Coming in at under 100 calories each these are perfect for kids and big kids alike. £0.55 per bar and available in two flavours.
I’ve seen these Nick’s Kexbars floating around on social media so I was excited to find one on this month’s Degustabox. It’s a simple idea- a crispy chocolate wafer with vanilla cream and milk chocolate. Totally delicious and some how without any added sugar. Available on Amazon for those itching to try these like I was, I don’t think you’ll regret it.
I’m always looking for new savoury snacks that don’t contain nuts and these Food Doctor ones are now a regular in my line up. Both the Full of Beans Protein Mix and Smokin’ Edamame Mix are super delicious, made from a blend of corn and beans which are high in fibre and contain protein. £1.00 per pack.
I wont’ lie, I totally forgot about trying these smoothie bites from LioBites until now. Made from quickly frozen strawberry and banana which is then dried in to a crunchy chip I’m sure these would be lovely and ideal for little kids, but perhaps not worthy of a £2.35 price tag. I won’t knock it until I’ve tried them though.
Apologies, but another product I am yet to try, but one I am quite keen to, oddly. I never thought I’d be excited about instant mashed potato but Idahoan’s Perfect Mash in roasted garlic flavour sounds strangely delicious and it will be featuring on my dinner menu soon- especially as I’m full of dental woes and infections right now.
Drinks wise, because I am a blogger for Degustabox I received both the alcoholic variety and the soft drink variety. Alcohol wise we have Happy Down Alcoholic PreMix which looks amazing. I haven’t tried this as I can’t drink at the moment (anti-biotics and pain killers, yay!) but I have it chilling ready and waiting as a belated birthday tipple.
On the soft drinks front we have Juicy Fuel Cola which is made from entirely natural ingredients, no added sugar and nothing artificial. With the news this contains one of your five a day I happily gulped down the cherry flavour, but did balk somewhat at the £2.00 price tag.
Haribo Giant Strawbs are Bob’s favourite sweet so these went straight to him and got an immediate 10/10. I have a soft spot for these too, so it’s great they now come in a share size bag! Also suitable for vegetarians so they no longer have to miss out!
Who wasn’t given Lucozade when they were poorly as a child? These is the cure all for everything, best served straight from the fridge.
These products from Mutti are both great store cupboard staples. The passata and finely chopped tomatoes both have a multitude of uses and are both great quality and reasonably priced (£1.40 and £1.00 respectively)
This isn’t how I remember long-life milk! This a2 milk long life semi-skimmed cows’ milk is natually free from the A1 protein found in cows’ milk so it’s more gentle on sensitive tummies and easier to digest. It also tastes pretty good, you’d be hard pushed to tell it apart from fresh. £1.50
Finally we have a selection of nut butters from Mindful Bites (£1.49 each). I love these little single serve pouches, they look so cute! I wasn’t able to try these thanks to my allergy but I’ve passed them on to eager taste testers. If I was able to eat these I’d be slinging them in my work bag with some fruit for a nutrient dense snack. Anyone who takes their nut butter seriously should be checking these out.
