Baking Biscuits

Garibaldi biscuits are something I have fond memories of. Always a treat; reserved mainly for visits to my Grandparents (they are a favourite of my Grandad’s) and known as “Squashed fly biscuits”.

A few days ago I stumbled on this recipe during my internet browsing and knew I had to have a go at making them asap.

Garibaldi Biscuits
From Ursula Ferrigno’s Complete Italian Cookery Course

115 g plain flour
85 g unsalted butter
55 g caster sugar, plus a little extra to finish
115 g dried currants
1 large egg, beaten

Preheat the oven to 180 C / 350 F. Grease a non-stick jelly roll tin (about 7×11 in), or if using a tin without non-stick properties, line with parchment paper so it overhangs on two sides of the tin.)

Place the flour, sugar and butter in a medium bowl and rub the butter in using your fingertips until it is evenly distributed throughout. Stir in the currants. Add almost all of the beaten egg to bind everything together and form a soft, but not sticky, dough.

Turn the dough into the tin and press down so the surface is even. Brush all over with the remaining egg and sprinkle with the extra sugar, to taste.

Bake in the centre of the oven for about 30 minutes, until the top is golden brown. When it is out of the oven cut into as many squares as you want, and leave to cool before eating.

Luckily I had just enough plain flour left (literally, spot on)

They didn’t look too pretty in the tin

Or straight out of the oven

But I couldn’t resist nibbling the crumbles that came off whilst slicing; burning my tongue in the process.

And admiring the sweet, sugar glazed flaky topping.

It was like being a child all over again.

Make them. Do it now. I urge you.

Sunday

My usual Sunday assortment of happy things!

The third new pair of shoes! This time courtesy of Zalando, whom I blogged about a couple of weeks ago. These make me feel about five again, I love them! And Shelly’s might just be my new go-to brand for awesome, comfortable shoes!

On Friday. Despite feeling shockingly unwell!

(not such a happy thing!) fingers crossed though, the new anti-biotics are kicking it in to touch and I don’t need to pay a visit to radiology tomorrow.

My Mum spoils me. I fell in love with *that* dress from Dorothy Perkins, and she surprised me by treating me to it. LOVE.

She is also responsible for the Little Miss Princess book below

The epic box of Austrian goodies was a wonderful suprise from Miss Fritha.
Cannot wait to get stuck in!
(The green and blacks was a present to myself. Because I’m worth it. Oui?)

Another happy thing?

Best.Friend. Passed her driving test. Watch out world. Trudi is mobile…and I’m going to be her trusty sidekick. I don’t think she realises it yet…but she is going to be my personal driver.

<3 well done Trudi! I also have Thursday off work this week, as my beautiful Becca has a Birthday! Woo, please keep fingers and toes crossed for gorgeous weather…we want a picnic! What’s making you smile this week? xxx

I think I have a problem…

I really have become shoe obsessed. Like…more so than ever. I’ve always been clothes over shoes, or makeup over shoes, or well…anything over shoes but lately I just can’t get enough. The number of boxes stacked in my wardrobe somewhat haphazardly because I’ve run out of room is getting silly. That doesn’t stop me lusting though…

Hello YULL

“Sarah WatkinsonYull established Yull in 2011 at 21. The 21-year-old completed her studies at Philip Green’s Fashion Retail Academy in 2009 before working for the family business in particular focusing on the import, export aspects of business. Since then she has taken the decision to combine her creative side and ardour for fashion with her business knowledge in the launching of her shoe brand Yull.

Sarah says that Yull is ‘style over fashion’, a break from the current trend-following flow of impracticable and ephemeral shoe brands.

Yull is a mix of vibrant colours and playful patterns on classic designs accompanied by very wearable and timeless shoes that are hard to find in the existing market.

The brand is very patriotic and represents ‘Britishness‘ incorporating the range with the English season’s needs for fashion footwear in sporting and cultural events”

All of the shoes on the Yull shop are incredible, but narrowing it down to a top three I pick;

Primrose: Named after Primrose Hill just north of Regents Park, London. This area has the best view of the whole city. Coloured two tone green to mirror the park, these shoes are to wear to one of the many summer picnics which frequently occur.

Green, Navy Blue and White Eco-leather

Hoxton: Situated in London in the borough of Shoreditch – a trendy and lively area where City workers and artists gather. Just the place for a bright pink suede shoe.

Pink Eco-suede and White Eco-leather

Heel Height: 3.8inch

Grosvenor: Named after the exclusive Grosvenor House Hotel in Dubai. Beautiful black patent, this shoe can be seen from Buddah Bar to Rhodes and Sloanes but especially Bar 44.

Black Patent Eco-leather

Heel Height: 3.8inch

All three pairs cost £65 each. Motivation (for me) to quit smoking STAT.

Have you heard of Yull yet? What pair takes your fancy?

xx

Snacking Saturday; Nature Valley

This week Snacking Saturday comes to you via a long-term favourite of mine, Nature Valley. I blogged about their gardens competition a couple of weeks back, and at the time also mentioned they had sent me some of their new bars to review! Mmm.

I would like to apologise, this isn’t going to be the best review. The suspected kidney infection is now maybe a kidney stone…and hence, I am on a little less than top form!
Haul!

I remember first seeing these bars a couple of years ago…and they vanished for a while before I really got a chance to try them. Now they are back. And yummy! I’m not a major berry girl but it was still enjoyable to me…the fruit and nut was divine! I like cereal bars with a softer texture (although it does break quite easily, meaning I get a messy desk!)

The very latest addition to the range are the crunchy and more bars. I confess, I am yet to try the oats and hazelnuts variety…but this was because I am too busy enjoying the oats and berries. What I really love about these bars is that they are reminiscent of hobnob biscuits, but better for you! The berry variety (despite my earlier claimed dislike for berries) has me hooked!

I also managed to finally track down the elusive ginger crunch granola bar, which isn’t on the website yet. This bar is part of the original line up and hugely delicious! If you see one, grab it (but only if you like ginger…this isn’t for the faint hearted!)

Who else is a Nature Valley fan? I remember once upon a time there being a banana variety. Unless I dreamt it. Any one else remember?

(I know the USA has more flavours…peanut butter I believe…if anyone fancies a bar exchange…)
